blood on tape/pet coffins - split - anathema sound - cass - 6$
This split presents a meeting of two stellar, young ambient projects that deserve your ears. Texas’ Blood on Tape is a duo comprised of Kevin O’Sullivan and David Gonzalez. Inspired by distant and peaceful lands in Bolivia, their composition combines melancholy synths, reverb-drenched guitars, and pastoral field recordings for an experience that coasts gently and soothes unequivocally. Indiana’s Pet Coffins is the solo work of Philip Egierski. His piece begins with jarring, dissonant chimes that eventually give way to a dense and melodic sound world full of whispering acoustic guitar strums and ethereal vocal drones. Both acts iterate that there is mystery in beauty and vice versa. With full color artwork, inserts, and labels by Matt Yacoub.

flea apparitions - transparent black- anathema sound - cass - 6$
Lorne Zeman is back with his lengthiest and most complex work to date. Transparent Black features eight separate pieces that showcase different approaches to what Zeman does best: warp your mind and distort your senses with sound. Voices whisper unintelligible phrases in your ear, creeping synths and guitars tell the tales of specters and lost in the night, tapes spew forth the sounds of the damned, and unholy feedback rears its ugly head to destroy any and all nuances in the mix. It all amounts to a twisted, post-apocalyptic fever dream that could only come out of a Rust Belt city like Pittsburgh. Features a full color artwork collaboration by Zeman and Matt Yacoub.

andreas brandal - liber null - anathema sound - cass - 6$
Norway’s twilight traveler Andreas Brandal is a sound craftsman of the highest order, using anything and everything as his source material. Liber Null is his harrowing descent into total aural blackness inspired by occult rituals and chaos magic. Creaks of old furniture, hum of the wilderness, static from old cassettes—all of it is buried deep within a bubbling sonic stew that boils over with the slow burn of synth, guitar, and some of the most menacing trumpet drones you’ll ever hear. Listen close and repeatedly, if you dare, as bleak, new flourishes continue reveal themselves and the ancient spirits threaten to take you down even further. With full color artwork, inserts, and labels by Matt Yacoub.

pummeler - jungle olympics- anathema sound - cass - 6$
After a string of releases on Small Doses, Digitalis Ltd., and Stunned, Denmark’s Mikkel Valentin Dunkerley adds another dead soldier to his arsenal of scorchers. Dunkerley considers Jungle Olympics to be his harshest work to date and he’s not kidding. Layer upon layer of heavily distorted guitar, electronics, field recordings, and effected vocals collide, compete, and ultimately envelop one another in a wild, frenzied fashion perfectly befitting the release title. Yet, through all the racket and clamor, a subtle, droning melody permeates and anchors each piece—leaving you hypnotized and begging for more. With full color artwork, inserts, and labels by Matt Yacoub.

age of wire and string - música de ir ao o cu - anathema sound - cass - 6$
Headquartered in Newcastle, England, this worldly trio is the meeting of three tremendously-accomplished musical minds. Featuring Peter Nicholson on cello, Neil Davidson on guitar, and Jamie Allen (whose circuitMusic we released in 2008) on electronics, Música de ir ao o cu puts forth two masterful slabs of improvisation. Subtlety is the name of the game, with each piece constantly teetering on edge. Still, each player finds perfect moments to go shine through as hacksawed strings, motorik rhythms, and cyborg voices erupt into expertly calculated chaos. The end result is a work that’s utterly freeing, soulful, and downright exhilarating to behold. With full color artwork, inserts, and labels by Matt Yacoub.

cliffsides - singularity - anathema sound - cass - 6$
Now firmly rooted in Brooklyn, Ryan McGill’s (Bones of Seabirds) melodic synth project continues to take full flight. Performed entirely on the Roland Juno 60 analog polysynth, this is one of McGill’s most lush and expansive releases thus far. Both pieces that make up Singularity stretch toward the furthest depths of the galaxy and bathe the listener in a wash of gorgeous melody that’s fit to make hearts flutter and spines chill. It’s immaculately composed, perfectly executed, and sure to deliver you straight to the light at the end of the tunnel. With full color artwork, inserts, and labels by Matt Yacoub.

wonder wheel - natural selection - hobo cult - cass - 7$
Paul A. Rosales, Wonder Wheel's creative mastermind, gave me the keys to the mansion when he said I could do a compilation album of his material. His back catalog now includes 34 albums, all of which was recorded in only 6 years! After a couple days of intensive listening, I selected some of my favorites from 2006-2009, which include home-recording gurus R. Stevie Moore and Ines Navarro. Avid enthusiast of his unique take on outsider synth pop, I was thrilled to wander the echoing halls of his lo-fi pop gems, filled with flowing 80's AM radio melodies, bouncing delayed vocals, shoegazing guitar fuzz, minimal beatbox cacophony and arpeggiated randomness. When you start listening to the music, you are instantly pulled into a whirl pool of teenage desire, angst and ecstasy. This is some dreamy, yet propulsive music with a lot of heart. The songs read like an open diary with encrypted messages. You get a feeling of what it could mean, but in the end, you just want to listen to his music over and over to try and understand this puzzling haze. Addictive sounds for the masses, with a refreshingly new approach to catchy writing. Some songs barely hold together, sounds just bouncing off each other... but that's the beauty of it. The ramshackle structures that keep you asking for more. Although, in recent years, Paul has been pushing the enveloppe with a cleaner and more distinctive arpeggiated synth palette, widening his musical focus in the fields of sound art and electroacoustic experiments (download Untouchables). Also being released this summer, Wonder Wheel I, another compilation album which will be out on vinyl, cd and digital download from the fine folks at Care In The Community Recordings (UK). There will be collaborative songs with Pradada and Ines Navarro appearing on that album. Stay tuned for more information on Wonder Wheel by visiting these links:

magic beach & asss - split - hobo cult - cass - 7$
For their first release, Magic Beach (Hobo Cubes & Monkey King / GOA) embark on a drugged out hiking trip up a cosmic mountain... looking for the hidden truth at the Cloud Temple. Electronic waves merge with distorted guitar feedback and loop into an ever evolving haze of stoner dreams. Noisy vocal mantras and high god guitar shredding float above heavy tribal drums. A definite kraut burner!
ASSS (from Portland), move away from their drone inducing drumming to subtler electronic treatments that will fill your blood with a meditative liquid, slowly bubbling as different effects pop into the mix. Their weird vocals and heavy cello-drone will make you wanna spread a thick layer of hashish on your brain and smoke it.

bernardino femminielli - la montaña del capricornio - hobo cult - cass - 7$
Bernardino Femminielli embarks on a galactic quest to seek out the unreachable zones of your psyche with his new opus: La Montaña del Capricornio. His 60 minute travelogue emanates good vibes with flowing arpeggiators and oceans of new age synths. The second half of the tape delves deep into darker territories... heavy asteroid type drones and water sounds bubble up into fragmented pieces and evolve into oscillating spaceships. The must have album of 2010!

panabrite & hobo cubes - split - hobo cult - cass - 7$
Panabrite dives deep into the colorful and pulsating underworlds of the sea with his fourth release: Sub-Aquatic Meditation. Bouncy synth melodies and beautiful arps serve as a perfect soundtrack to your early morning journey into a free floating water paradise. A great tape for Library Music enthusiasts... speaking of which, you can download some great rips from Panabrite's vinyl collection on his blog Lunar Atrium.
Hobo Cubes gravitates towards spacey soundscapes with hints of tropical bliss. Driving arps and fluid drones merge nicely with the weird sounds layered above it all. Great follow up to his previous cd: Hypnotic Infinitum. Next up: split C-44 with Aradia, split cd with Pwin ∆∆ Teaks & a solo C-40 on Rotifer Cassettes.

cherry blossoms with josephine foster - 23 productions - cdr - 8$
Josephine Foster bravely travelled to Nashville to seek out the legendary southern folk song and cosmic kazoo medicine show known as the Cherry Blossoms. Eventually Josephine did track them down and soon (as one could only dream of...) the sprawling jams did spin and the heartfelt social songs did ring. Josephine stayed on for a nice long spell recording and living among the Cherry Blossoms for a couple weeks. Many months later, I came through Nashville on my annual pilgrimage, and when John Allingham and Peggy Snow (voices and authors of most Cherry Blossoms songs) gave me a cdr documenting their favorite audio snapshots of Josephine's visit, I was thrilled to hear how organically Peggy and John's songs mix with Josephine's songs and weave in between and throughout the sprawling backporch Cherry Blossom jams. As usual, the Cherry Blossom's ramshakle eight piece band wheezes and whirs through the skeletons of their compositions, bending time and tone until complete chaos is just around the corner. Then typically, the stoned percussion wizard or the holwing antics of Peggy Snow will eventually shuffle everyone back into place as they begin to charge forward into some frenzy that only Hasil Adkins or Henry Flynt could have dreamt of. This dynamic album manages to cover many of the moods of this complex musical organism. From blue mountain meditations, hard cider country swing, still southern nights with all the windows open, backporch hillbilly hysterics wrap around campfire prayers... you may never get another chance to hear Americana quite like this again.

charlie nothing + dingulator ®™ pat. pend. - destijl records -cass - 6$
charlie nothing & dingulator was one of the seemingly myriad 80s charlie nothing cassettes and it's inclusion was, in part, intended within a 2cd anthology that we'd planned but the amount of material is too great and the moments therein are too grand to even dream of an edit.
although this is fairly late in mr nothing's oeuvre, we can't think of a more fully realized statement regarding the scope of his playing recycled automotive steel guitars and the performing of his big dingulator song sweet (or suite, as it were, a concept of his that implied all songs were but one song) than a reissue of this 1985 manifesto-like piece.
what you are about to hear, is dingulation ..

various - my friend rain - sublime frequencies - cd & dvd- 20$
My Friend Rain -- A film by Robert Millis (color/38 minutes). Filmed throughout Southeast Asia by Robert Millis between 2002-2004, My Friend Rain is an abstract homage to the endless monsoon cycles of rebirth and destruction. Dreamy musical segments, fleeting glimpses, odd sounds, temple shrines, tropical backdrops, decay, death, languid afternoon rains, and mysterious celebratory events take the viewer from soaked mornings in the lowlands of the Irrawaddy Delta to humid nights on the streets of Isan province. Two tracks originally released on Millis' Leaf Music, Drunks, Distant Drums CD from 2002 can now be witnessed for the first time in this film: an amazing elephant mahout playing a song on a leaf with his mouth and a Burmese marionette orchestra musician performing expertly on tuned drums. The overall experience is an impressionistic collage of sight and sound captured live and in the moment on location in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Along with the DVD which features 12 minutes of extra footage and deleted scenes, the package includes a bonus CD with the film's soundtrack of traditional and popular music culled from live performance, cassette and LP archives. Some of the soundtrack highlights: a gorgeous Thai Luk Thung track by Waiphot Phetsuphan, a classic Khmer performance by Pan Ron, one of the Queens of Cambodian music, and an epic Burmese pop rendition of the Bee Gee's "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart," alongside folk performers, street musicians and a traditional Burmese orchestra. Robert Millis, original co-founder of both Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT, also co-produced the Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days (DTD 011CD) book/CD project on Dust-to-Digital and is a frequent contributor to the Sublime Frequencies label. DVD/CD comes in a 2-disc jewel box with a full-color insert. DVD is NTSC format, region free.

blue sabbath black cheer & irr. app. (ext.) - skeletal impostion - gnarled forest – cass - 6$
This is nothing short of perfect mood music for breaching the walls of reality. This is music for that dark hallway you have to walk down from time to time, every step an uncomfortable one. Feelings of unease and vague fear permeate both sides of this cassette. Sounds fall, trip up and collapse in on each other. Nothing is what it seems to be; everything changes in the darkness into the unfamiliar and alien.
This is the first of three planned collaborations between WM. Rage, Stan Reed and Matthew Waldron (this cassette will be followed at some point by an LP and a CD of all new material). Overall, the raw materials for these pieces sound like they have come from the boys in Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, but the construction of the music has Waldron’s signature all over it. Skeletal Imposition has more in common with older irr. app. (ext.) releases like Perekluchenie than with Waldron’s more recent albums, however.
“Skeletal Imposition Pt 1” is a fuzzy, grainy journey through the darker corners of sonic spectrum. Layers of dust clog up electronic noise, waves of sinister rhythms and blankets of unsettling drones give way to strange screams and moans, none of which sound like any living creature but perhaps something else that couls only be found in a story by H.P. Lovecraft or William Hope Hodgson. On the second part of “Skeletal Imposition,” a beast has arrived and guttural, animal vocals howl, trying to communicate across an unfathomable void. The sense of dread that I feel is very, very strong.
This is a terrifying record and a great introduction to this series of collaborations. This sort of dark mood music gets under my skin and leaves a powerful impression. It is not dark ambience; this is as far from that clichéd and dull genre as possible. I have only played this in daylight so far because I do not trust that I would be safe with it once the sun sets."

jason leinwand - s/t –sloow tapes – zine - 8$
Awesome collection of psychedelic collage art by this Brooklyn based artist. A collection of mushrooms, skulls, aliens and eastern symbolism. As Jason says: “My work is about Being. Bright, colorful, paper collages functioning as the Mandala or the Yantra: a meditational tool aimed at self-discovery, spiritual awakening, and devotion to the Divine Being. Navigating Consciousness through laser beams, Shakti, and joy. Confronting Fear by maintaining a rigorous process, Kali, and death. Experiencing Harmony from symmetry, UFO’s, and the cosmos. Densely layered patterns, shapes, and line hold together deep, symmetrical spaces where mind and body potential is revealed and explored. In either case, an attempt to create a magic Sacred Space where our primordial questions about Being, co-exist with comic books, science fiction, Timothy Leary and Terrance McKenna. A magic Sacred Space where the divine mother goddess can just as easily caress and nurture you as ferociously rip your face off.” Full-colour cover and 18 pages b&w.

Anthony Swanox has been shadow-walking the greater west coast for a half-decade-plus at this point by our count, operating in various capacities, from helming the moss-cult micro-label Caligula Recordings to contributing percussion for live Sudden Oak actions to his own erratic stream of tranced private modes under the Swanox moniker. Past CDRs and tapes were bathed in a blacker light, crawling through various doom-haunted ambient sludge parking lots, but Dawnrunner hitchhikes down a markedly different road. The album opens with a hot springs soak in glowing, long-form new age ritual electricity before slowly dissolving into a patchwork of mumbly, loner drone-folk and hypnotized dusk hikes through fields of wet ferns. There’s an inner peace vibe to many of the B side pieces that’s never been heard in a Swanox sound-structure before, and the evolution feels brave. A strange collection of questing songs from a rad west coast lifer. Pro-dubbed cassettes in cases with cool photo portrait covers of Swanox’s brother, smoking by a beamer in the forest. Take the ride. Edition of 100.

"Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, George Mitchell recorded extensively in the South. Mitchell concentrated mainly on local blues traditions, recording some famous bluesmen and many otherwise ignored artists. The George Mitchell Collection was originally released as a series of forty-five EPs on Fat Possum; this LP contains our favorite fourteen tracks. This LP represents songs from many well-known blues musicians such as Fred McDowell, Furry Lewis and Joe Calicott as well as some from criminally under-represented artists like Jessie Mae Hemphill, Rosa Lee Hill and John Lee Ziegler. Comes with a short booklet of photos, discographical notes and recollections."

warm climate - camouflage on the river wretched - stunned records - cass - 7$
Even those familiar with Warm Climate’s last decade of underground madness will find ‘Camouflage on the River Wretched’ a most combustible cocktail. Shaken, stirred, or molotov – any preference? No matter, it’s all going to be pleasantly poured down the hatch when Warm Climate’s iconoclastic bandleader Seth Kasselman grips microphone and guitar. Moving along from 2009’s pop dementia sleeper-hit ‘Edible Homes’, now Warm Climate explores dark urban noir, graffiti-speckled rock n’ roll, and mysterious cinematic narrative. Sounds about right for a group who was publicly declared “Best Band in L.A.” to the hearty agreement of the audience at this year’s Bottled Smoke Festival. Hell, Warm Climate IS Los Angeles, or at least one especially crucial aspect of its tremendous Voice. In all its befuddling and inscrutable glory, the city itself seeks purest expression through the genius minds who roam its Escher-like sprawl. Warm Climate has deftly responded to the schizoid urges of L.A. in good measure: with an incredible music that will be remembered long after the cars, buildings, and sea of people. Special edition of 222 pro-dubbed & imprinted c36 tapes w/ double-sided jcard and insert.

dire wolves- jams and the giant peace - stunned records - cass - 7$
Now here is the summer album we’ve been absolutely craving. ‘Jams and the Giant Peace’ is the kind of psychedelic monster that immediately transports us back to being seventeen again, cruising around town invincible and high while blowing the car’s factory-installed speakers to shreds. When the shop owners and neighbors demand to know who’s responsible for all the sudden ruckus, tell them Pittsburgh-based trio Dire Wolves just got to the party. And they aren’t leaving until every cymbal crash & scorching chord has been loosed. Along the way curveballs are thrown of classic Kraut/Japanese psych, liberated studio deck manipulation, and free-sound meltdown. This is simply par for these dude’s course. Twist one up and take that top off, summer’s best jams are just beginning to drop. Limited edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c36 tapes with double-sided color jcard.

armali lari - ma tu la pasta la vò? - stunned records - cass - 7$
Sicilian duo Armali Lari first introduced their sound to Stunned as “camera music for informal people,” a distinction we found quite the understatement upon actually hearing the stuff. More accurately, this “camera” is a dizzying kaleidoscope that never halts its colored tumble, and we hope the “informal people” mentioned have a penchant for the insane. From moment one, we were proudly counted among the target audience Armali Lari suggests, because a work like ‘Ma tu la pasta la vò?’ is an unhinged paradox worth picking apart over and over again. A fascinating embroidery is woven from the simple array of largely acoustic instruments employed by Armali Lari’s Francisco Calandrino & Nicola Giunta. Their all-inclusive angle results in our whole sensorium being whisked to an environment wildly infused with humor, abandon, and mischief — a place we don’t want to scoot from anytime soon. Limited edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c40 tapes w/ double-sided jcard and insert.

donato epiro - supercontinent - stunned records - cass - 7$
‘Supercontinent’ is Donato Epiro’s freshest hypnotic adventure, and a glimpse into some future tropical world where lysergic acid rain waters the neon foliage. Animatronic apes and mechanical birds flock around Donato as he expertly fashions his sonic hieroglyphs, while sibilant rhythms and humid chants pour freely into the deviant ceremony from all sides. Join the intoxicating celebration, and play this tape whenever you need a little break from the continent you’re currently standing upon. Limited edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c30 tapes w/ double-sided jcard and insert.

rambutan - dream of a future desert - stunned records - cass - 7$
It’s no accident that this is Rambutan’s third entry in Stunned’s catalog, and hopefully it won’t be his last. Appearing to have slowed the prolific pace of his 2009 solo offerings, we were starting to wonder what’s been brewing in Eric Hardiman’s cauldron for 2010. Then this luminous hour was slipped our way, and we instantly realized what the wait was about. ‘Dream of a Future Desert’ is Rambutan’s personal zeitgeist of ethereal texture-craft and his definitive statement of the year. With an evolved ear for deep sonorous spaces, Hardiman maneuvers his glistening guitar & honeydripping synth lines into an overall manifestation of desert mirage and articulation of oasis air. Epic in scope and mesmerizing in its holographic nature, ‘Dream of a Future Desert’ presents itself as an absolutely essential chapter in Rambutan’s inimitable discography. Limited edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c60 tapes w/ double-sided jcard and insert.

tuluum shimmering / plurals - split - dead pilot records - cdr - 8$
Oh how far we've come! Hot on the heels of the massive split from Archers by the Sea and Pine Smoke Lodge comes the 7th installment in the series! Pairing up Plurals with Tuluum Shimmering.
Plurals need no introduction by now. "Ocset Refund" is a track I heard come to life live a few months back in a small pub in High Wycombe. I remember being totally paralyzed by it then just as much as I am now. Plurals have mastered the art of hypnotics with synths and howls and keep bettering themselves with each release. "Ocset Refund" is a piece that definitely brings images of stars, planets, and solar systems to mind; almost like you are falling through space down to earth with it's desperateness. The piece ends with a huge wave of blissful synths which are very calming in comparison to the rest of the tracks sheer intensity.
Tuluum Shimmering has a string of limited cassette releases to his name, all with fantastic zoned out names and artwork to suit the music perfectly. Tuluum combines elements of new age, ritualistic tribal sounds and psychedelic drone. This may well be the most far out psyche jam ever on Dead Pilot. It's fantastically uplifting and playfully melodic and rhythmic as it builds from chiming passages to walls of bright glare that end so abruptly that you bought out of your trance with quite a thump.
Packaged in stickered black digipak with eye popping artwork by Ekca Liena with hand numbered insert and hand stamped disc. Limited to 100 copies.

After a long silence we are all treated to a new Warmth release. Steev took his time on this release, as is it intended to be a proper full length. Skin Graft andPimlo. After my performance at the first (and only?) The product is stark.

enfer boreal - break the illusion - blackest rainbow –cdr -9$
New disc from Maxime Primault who has been making music under the Enfer Boreal name for a few years now and has a nice little discography with releases on labels such as Digitalis, Tape Drift, 267 Lattajjaa and Stunned Records. This three track disc is bookended by two shorter pieces, with the epic middle track hitting in at 25 minutes. Opener 'Fingers Cut' blurs wildly psychedelic electric fusions with hazy feedback bliss outs. The epic title track follows which sounds like being underwater with neon lamps drowning beneath you with fantastic high riff-ery blazing throughout. 'Dusty Map' closes the disc with a whirring somewhat darker drone zone with almost industrial sound sparking away in the background, this dark industrial sound surpasses with a lulling guitar meditation and completes the album perfectly. Limited to 69 copies in parchment paper covers with new photography by myself.

sacrum - s/t - blackest rainbow –cdr -9$
First release from the trio of Robert Horton, Lisa Cameron and Douglas Ferguson. 'Parakeets Of Doom' opens for the disc and musically its as far out and weird as its title, churning twangs, background blues jams and an underlying percussive bassy rumble. 'This Transmission Is Fucked' again equally has a vibe that its title clearly sums up, here the trio melt into one metallic rust almost 18 minute disaster... certain moments sound like thick metal panels are literally being sliced in two. The release finishes with the epic 33 minute 'Somewhere In Oakland (Horizontal Mix--', opens with a freakish blend of music box and wavering underlying dark fuzz and drone, the drone gets bassier throughout with string wig-outs and more gentle strumming laid over at various moments, with percussion and various other instruments entering play throughtout this final opus from the trio... A great release of odd improvisation and multi-instrumental blurts from start to finish. Hand stamped CDRs in full colour covers, with insert, limited to 70 copies.

Richard Dawson's project that debuted on Blackest Rainbow earlier this year, which was followed by CDRs on Bells Hill, Low Point and Dead Pilot, and another release on Blackest Rainbow, a split cassette with fellow UK droner Gareth Hardwick. Copies of the cassette have been extremely hard to come by with Best Coast's growing popularity following a series of excellent 7"s on PPM, Group Tightener, Art Fag, Black Iris and Atelier Ciseaux, so the time definitely seemed right for this reissue. mark mcguire - tidings / amethyst waves - weird forest - 2xlp - 20$
mark mcguire - tidings / amethyst waves - weird forest - cd - 10$
Trying to put the last 15 years of music into context, you’d be hard pressed to get anyone to agree on a single thing. If anything, this period has been a collective convergence of all things cool-sounding: naïve experimentalism, academic composition, art-rock synthesis, electronic nihilism/flagellation, and, well, everything else. Mark McGuire could muddy anyones interpretation of the contemporary canon with his buddies in the triadic mega-unit, Emeralds, his collaborative outings in Sun Watcher and Skyramps (with Daniel “Oneohtrix Point Never” Lopatin), and his prolific, yet well-executed, solo work. ”Have you heard his shredability, incomprehensible astral traveling and meditative neutron stasis on any of those solo jams, the dude must be ancient!?” Truth is, Mark Mcguire is a youngin’, not a refugee of the ’70s. Nor is he mining unfamiliar territory; he produces something old and familiar, yet it sounds so fresh and necessary for today.
Originally released as limited edition cassettes and masterfully cleaned up for this definitive release by James Plotkin, Tidings/Amethyst Wavesfinds McGuire packing 60+ minutes with trance-inducing, melodic guitar intricacies, an occasional wall-of-squall reminiscent of Mizutani riding a thunder horse, and filaments of a drifting stratosphere where organic synthed-out solos are nestled in tight. With this release, Mark McGuire has hatched a true American Euro-vision utilizing major shifts in the ‘music as language’ paradigm. No joke, this is where Wyld Stallyns is heading in the year 2398 A.G. and Tidings/Amethyst Waves is as essential as anything in the Emeralds catalog.

The lothario has been unmasked and Brad Rose’s (The North Sea, ALTAR EAGLE) Charlatan is free to spread melodic synth glory outside the confines of mystery. On one of the most widely available releases from the project to date, Rose explores and indulges in many avenues of romance and beauty through sound. A brilliant balance is achieved as moods drift smoothly from warm and embraced to pensive and isolated. Some tracks shimmer like finely tuned pop gems, while others contently soak in the ether and allow tones and field recordings to sink in extra deep. All in all, this is the perfect summer excursion, serving some ice cold bliss to help fight the heat. On pro-dubbed, imprinted cassettes with artwork by Caroline Teagle.

Two Brooklyn synth duos send oscillations across the borough in three-part suites. Ryan McGill (Cliffsides) and Franklin Teagle’s Afterlife gets the ball rolling with an epic journey that glides through gentle sequencing, bubbling abstractions, and nostalgic melodies. Steadfastly adhering to the code of repetition and ultra-subtle dynamics, each piece gradually pushes toward deeper levels of entrancement. On the project’s debut, Michael Chau (Liquid Days) and Jeremy Mills’ Bedroom answers from high atop the clouds with pure Eno-inspired tone float. With remarkable focus and a knack for dramatic, sweeping melodies, the duo shifts eloquently from minimal passages to ones dense with cosmic atmosphere. Each piece unfolds like a tale from a distant plane and is packed with intense beauty. Jump into the vortex and stay awhile. On pro-dubbed, imprinted cassettes with artwork by Caroline Teagle.

bertin - mini - stenze quo - cass - 6$
An album of 9 miniatures by Bertin van Vliet out of Nijmegen. The minimalistic theme goes through in the titles of the songs, which are simply listings of the instruments used. Allthough, on "mini" the tunes are more reduced and instrumental.

uneven universe - silk fur and flesh - tapes by holly - cass - 6$
outer space - arbor - lp – 16$
John Elliott’s Outer Space project is a laboratory for electronic investigation. Acting as a continuance of the studies of mid 20th century electronic music composers such as Nik Pascal and Laurie Spiegel, Elliott’s music is deeply indebted to the inner workings of the electric signal. Acting almost as a meditation, through the simple gesture of translation Elliott’s process begins to reveal itself as electricity is converted into acoustic pressure and potential; the melody of physics. The six recordings on the album are each a microcosmic view into Elliott’s practice; a keystone, illuminating his solo practice as well as his work as a member of Emeralds. Composed and recorded over the past three years without the use of digital synthesizers and arpeggiation; a record closely connected to a personal path, attempting to make sense, to understand one’s journey. Mastered by Keith Fullerton Whitman; pressed in an edition of 650 copies on clear vinyl with full color gloss covers and heavy stock printed euro-style inner sleeves.

svarte greiner - penpals forever (& ever) - digitalis recordings - lp - 18$
Svarte Greiner is the nom de plume of Deaf Center's Erik K. Skodvin. Hailing from Norway, his solo efforts are always stripped bare, white-knuckle sojourns through dark, haunted ambient sonic corridors. "Penpals Forever (and Ever)" is the imaginary tale of a long dead Baroque painter and his telekinetic correspondence with a flightless bird. It feels archaic; experimental death marches circa 1622. Like Guercino's Et in Arcadia Ego, once the end is realized there's nowhere left to go. It's beyond our experience and sometimes you never recover from the shock.
Despite its rather cheery title, "Penpals Forever (and Ever)," is another step toward the abyss. Musically sparse, Svarte Greiner finds new channels connecting desolate landscapes through ethereal nightmares. It is music best served cold. Chattering, looping guitar lines that feel like muscle being separated from bone slowly build into aching piles of aural dissonance. It's painful to a point. Recorded voices speak a language you can't understand underneath ominous, echoing single notes. Distant metal fragments scrape the dirt from detuned strings while a nefarious feathered minstrel bows dying instruments in the background. No hope left, death is just around the corner.
As it ever was, Svarte Greiner is again weaving something deliciously sinister. This is music that is uncomfortably bare. Within its blood-stained confines there is nowhere to hide. Skodvin's tangled, gnarled tale goes back and forth into infinity until it becomes clear that the flightless bird in question lives inside your skull. Drowning slowly into one's own twisted mind, "Penpals" is the soundtrack of loss; the procession of fears gradually becoming so overbearing that you can't escape your own demons.
**The first side (first two tracks) were originally issued on the "Penpals Forever" cassette on Digitalis in 2008, limited to 180 copies. Both tracks have been completely remastered. The remaining pieces are all new and exclusive to this release**
brother raven - VSS-30 - digitalis recordings - lp - 15$
In 2010, the ride never seems to stop so if you want to get off you've just got to jump head first. Brother Raven, the Seattle-based duo of Jason Anderson (Spare Death Icon, Gift Tapes, etc) and Jamie Potter (ex-Bonus, Million Mists, etc) are taking synthesizer-based music into new and unexpected realms. Anderson and Potter are total time travelers, searching out old, forgotten methods and sounds and taking them into a square-wave future. "VSS-30" is rooted in its namesake's primitive synthesis but is forward-thinking enough to take the listener on a tripped-out cosmic space walk.
"VSS-30" picks up where the duo's previous release on Digitalis (2009's cassette, "Nellie") left off. It's a continuation of those ritualistic astral projects but with more polish and unexpected surprises. The opening piece, "Space," acts as a segue into this new, expanded universe. Washed-out drones greet you at the gates, advancing methodically until noisy blasts and sonar-infused rhythms bring the facade crashing down. Once the first beat drops, though, "VSS-30" has arrived. Disco flirtation and blooped-out nowhere hooks rise between the waves. It's almost pop music, but not quite and falls apart just as fast as it arrives.
As with all their music, Brother Raven's sound is 100% improvised and always recorded to tape. That added warmth keeps their space-age intonations from getting distant or cold. The flip-side of the record dials things in and shows just how much focus and restraint the duo possess. More blitzed beats push things along at a reliable pace, underscored by repetitive tones leading into candy-striped, totally sweet synthesizer loops. "VSS-30" seems, on the surface, to be all over the map but it's absolutely cohesive and flows like a perfect pink stream.
There's no doubt that there's been dozens upon dozens of new synth-based bands and artists coming out of the woodwork over the last couple of years, but Brother Raven have shown over and over that they've got a head above most. "VSS-30" is an impressive, fully-realized piece of work that cements their place on the astral plane.
Vinyl only edition of 300 copies housed in silkscreened jackets. Please note that the b-side label of the record is stamped, not the a-side.

With so much being made of current practitioners of the Kosmiche/New Age vibe here's your opportunity to hear an original. Original copies hardly ever surface and even the 2007
repress commands quite a fee on internet auction sites. This straight analog pressing sounds as close to the original master tapes as you can get. 500 made.
Pressed at RTI.
"If you have been wondering what all the fuss about "private press new age" is, go here to find out. Your mind shall be subtly blown..." Fader
Wizards was my first deep trance electronic music album. This album was inspired by Terry Riley , one of the earliest people ever to compose and perform long, extended, cyclic pieces in the electronic format. This music was composed and performed in '81 and '82.
I consider this album my best work.
The instrumentation is three Sequencial Circuits PRO-1s, Crumar Traveler One and a Yamaha SK-20, all real time recording to a Teac 4-track reel-to-reel. I mixed the four tracks to a Teac A-7300 Master 2-Track tape recorder using a DeltaLab DL-2 to create the delay track. In 2006, I used a Tascam 34B 4-track to remaster all my master tapes to digital master of 196 KHz/24 bit .WAV files using Soundforge 8 software.
The original Wizards LP was published in the Summer of 1982 with the black and white cover. The initial tracks had not names and were call Movements I-V. Several years later sales had slowed down, in an effort to improve sales we tried the color cover and I created names for each track, as shown on the samples.

spiritualized - ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space - plain recordings- lp - 24$
Originally released in 1997 (on the same day as Radiohead's OK Computer), Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space is the third album from Jason Pierce's post-Spacemen 3 project, and his most brilliant work to date. A hypnotic, narcotic, psychedelic gospel album full of confessional songs about heartbreak and drug abuse. This record is a flat out masterpiece that received a 10.0 rating from Pitchfork. 180 gram vinyl housed in full-color innersleeves.

altar eagle - mechanical gardens - type - lp - 19$ sold out
Brad Rose (aka The North Sea) is probably the last person you’d expect to see at the helm of a pop album. A folk record – maybe, a noise record – sure, but pop? Probably not. Yet that’s exactly what he and his wife Eden Hemming have done with ‘Mechanical Gardens’. The altar eagle sound might not come as much of a shock for those cassette collectors who have managed to source copies of the duo’s now rare debut EPs, but for the rest of the world it should serve as a radical change in direction for one of experimental music’s most valuable sons.
The ear-splitting noise that enticed listeners on ‘Bloodlines’ is all but forgotten as Brad and Eden pick through shimmering dream-pop and cold-wave electronics with the greatest of ease. The quality is assured within minutes of the gorgeous Slowdive-esque opener ‘Battlegrounds’. Anchored by Eden’s humming, ethereal vocal tones, the song is a glorious statement of intent and while the band go into clubbier directions on the second half, this song is a gateway to their sound.
Possibly the biggest surprise on ‘Mechanical Gardens’ is the sound shift which occurs mid-way through the record, as the bubbling bliss of ‘B’Nai B’Rith Girls’ gives way to the abrasive electro growl of ‘Monsters’. Influenced in part by Eden’s long-time love affair with techno and Brad’s recent obsession with synthesizers, the duo strike a perfect middle ground between crumbling experimentation and pop excess. This is rarely better explored than on ‘Spy Movie’, a track that somehow combines the supposedly warring sounds of Juan Atkins and early My Bloody Valentine.
On ‘Mechanical Gardens’ Brad and Eden have created an album that revels in its grab-bag of influences, but somehow they have managed to emerge with a sound that is totally singular. It’s pop music for sure, but uncynical, atypical and hugely enjoyable.

lou reed - metal machine music - sister ray – 2xlp – 25$
"180 gram and double gatefold vinyl. This LP contains a stereo reproduction of the original quadrophonic master, playable on home theater systems. Program ends in a locked groove, just like the original. This is the one and only official re-mastered Metal Machine Music reissue, supervised and approved by Lou himself. The original. The one that started it all. Noise rock -- industrial rock. Underground for years, it survived on the power of an idea. No key, no vocals, no set rhythm.... hhhmmmmm feedback forever. Supervised by Lou Reed and faithfully remastered to the last squeal. The out-of-print 'Quad' has been replicated for a perfect vinyl version playable on your stereo turntable with the original rear sections moved to the center of the front left/right speakers. It's worth getting a turntable to hear this. We worked from digital transfers (96k 24bit) made from the original analogue masters. The original label supplied us with these files and photo copies of the analogue reels including copies of Bob Ludwig's mastering notes. An act of love for an act of sound."

hunter gracchus / the kommissar hjuler und frau - split - blackest rainbow – lp -19$
"Meeting of melted minds on this split LP featuring Sheffield based long time local buddies Hunter Gracchus and Germany based performance and musical duo of Kommissar Hjuler Und Frau (aka Mama Baer). The Hunter Gracchus have released an ever growing catalogue of super well received releases for the likes of Chironex, Golden Lab, Recollections of Knulp and Chocolate Monk. They also collaborated with Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides and Chora as Le Drapeau Noir, as well as performing solo and in other fantastic far out acts such as Vampire Blues, Harappian Night Recordings and Blue Yodel, as well as two thirds of the trio running the excellent Singing Knives label and all working full time. I have to admit, I have no idea how they can manage to do all this, pretty damn impressive. Their side is an amazing live recording from La Planta, Argentina entitled 'Mujeres De La Boca', and if you've ever been to their Furniture Makers practice space, it sounds like Hunter Gracchus somehow managed to transport its entire contents of obscure musical objects over there with their peculiar brains to record some of the best live shit they've produced so far... a really great side long free playing improvised weird out with screwed up voices, skronky blurts and freestyle tribal percussion. Kommissar Hjuler Und Frau have been releasing material for quite some time on their own Der Schöne Hjuler-Memorial-Fond label, including a host of obscenely limited CDRs, cassettes and records. On top of that they've found the time to release some truly astounding genre blending avant craziness on Ultra Eczema, Scumbag and Blossoming Noise. For this split LP, KHJ & F's 'Zwei Einenperson (Pt. 2)', is a manic 22 minute side of avant garde experi-mentalism, with Kommissar Hjuler shredding electric guitar strings and destroying tapes while Mama Baer's insane vocal fluctuates between the erotic and pure demonic screaming. This recording of Kommissar Hjuler und Frau was made in March 2009 when working on the set for the performance of Zwei Eineperson. This was presented live at the vernissage of Mama Baer's and Kommissar Hjuler's exhibition Geteilter Raum at Kunstraum Winterthur, Switzerland on 2nd April 2009. A CD-R with several parts from their work on this set was previously released on their SHMF label in a very small edition. This is the re-issue of part 2 from their recordings, live in their living room. Edition of 500 on heavyweight vinyl with pro printed jackets, and insert."
beggin your pardon miss joan - edges - blackest rainbow –cd -12$
"Edges will be the first widely available release by Beggin' Your Pardon Miss Joan. It is a collection of several old songs from previous highly-limited releases on Centre of the Wood, Dead Pilot and Reverb Worship, plus five new tracks. The project is from the minds of Lex and Vanessa Panayi. Some of you may recognize Lex, as he also plays under the name of Guanaco ±, whose LP Sky Burials was released earlier this year on BR. On this 9-track CD, there are moments comparable to some of the material on the aforementioned LP, but at times its approach is more singer-songwriter based with more vocals, as well as merging autumnal psychedelic string picking excursions and traditional folk guitar meanderings. A really gorgeous collection of songs. Edition of 500, full color pro-printed card wallets."

twinsistermoon - then fell ashes - blackest rainbow –lp -19$
"Brand new full length vinyl LP from Natural Snow Buildings' Mehdi Ameziane solo project. This is the third Twinsistermoon release since 2009's The Hollow Mountain LP and Bride of Spirits 7" which were both released on the excellent Dull Knife label. Following on from these two gems, various obscure self released items and CDs on Digitalis and Students of Decay, Ameziane's sound has grown somewhat darker at times with this LP featuring nearly 50 minutes of brand new material. The A-side features 6 tracks, where as the B side is complemented with a huge, almost 25 minute track. The opening track 'Black Nebulae' is a gorgeously textured psychedelic drone-based piece, followed by a short, quieter, guitar plucked piece with vocals, but no words, entitled '1976'. 'Ghost That Was Your Life' is a stunning beautiful layered guitar piece with Ameziane's astounding beautiful vocals shining through. 'Big Sand' opens as one of the darker pieces, with an occult feeling to its sound, swirling vocal drones, almost like a choir at times, and in come those stunning warm and distinctive gutar sounds with layered ghostly sound scapes, that haunt much of Ameziane's solo and NSB recordings. Half way through this track it fades into layered field recordings, drones, and distant chimes, the sound of this track at this point just has a real melancholy vintage sound, the last two minutes are again a change of sound with a slow plucking of guitar strings. 'Desert Prophecy' returns of the sound of just Ameziane and his guitar, with some lo-fi electric riffing distortion in the background. It's pretty incredible to hear this and think that it's from 2010, and not from the 60s or 70s. The sixth and final track on the first side is 'Trailer', another beautiful somewhat lighter folk sound, which is interesting considering the following is the album's title track, 'Then The Ashes Fell', a side long track which is a considerably darker and heavier track than much of the rest of the LP, but it weaves in some beautiful lighter more reflective moments. Pro printed covers and labels. Heavyweight vinyl."

_parmalee, tribute to a dog_ is the follow-up to eyes like saucers' _still living in the desert..._ and the aan/e.l.s. collaboration, _kristallivirta_. oddly evocative of early folkways and nonesuch "field recordings,"_parmalee..._ explores the potentialities of autistic, automatic-composition through the employment of relatively primitive acoustic instrumentation and primitive electronics (homemade oscillators, fuzz, and casiotone). the resulting product is a unique foray into structurally defiant, yet intrinsically organic electro-acoustic music.

blood on tape - the terror of solitudes - stunned records - cass - 7$
Following acclaimed releases on Anathema Sound, Reverb Worship, and their own Softland City imprint, Blood on Tape return here with a work of slow-burning beauty and subtle menace. Side A begins with delicate tones of acoustic guitar, harmonium, voice, and percussion traveling an unhurried journey of celebration toward a bit more electric B-Side. Using Borges’ Book of Imaginary Beings as a conceptual launch-point, this tape’s back half is an improvisational surge of six-string quake & purifying feedback. Embodying a briefly-burning comet, ‘The Terror of Solitudes’ concludes without a speck of dust or debris; just the lingering pure energy of a duo in dynamic communion. roped off - blows glass in space / discovers a new angle - stunned records - cass - 7$
Forces to be reckoned with in their own right as farmers of prime Delaware sound crop, Mike Haley (Wether, 905 Tapes) and Dave Doyen (2:00AM Tapes, Vales) tag team a set of bent synthesizers on this c40, bringing their new duo Roped Off into snarling maturity. We presume that blowing glass in space leads one to smoke something especially dank out of that glass in space. Let’s further assume that the discovery of a new angle was not only novel, but an inevitable consequence of these actions. No matter how it’s sliced, or slices through the listener, it’s an entirely unpredictable ride in the opposite direction of a safe synth reality. These boyz mean biz. connector — steel/rust - stunned records - cass - 7$
Carnal energy meets primal masculinity meets 360 tons of public-art-installation STEEL. Entering the belly of this beast for two separate midnight sessions, Bryce Loy (Abaddon Records) and Peter Lamons scratch and beat the RUST nearly clean off their instrument of creation/object of destruction. This is Connector — both the name of the experimental percussion project of Bryce & Peter’s, debuting on this cassette, as well as the name of a Richard Serra mega-sculpture erected last year in the belly of yet another beast: Orange County, California. The Connector duo’s pacing and control is tremendous within Serra’s massive acoustical space over both their 25-minute sides. The intimate sounds of crickets, heaving breath, and torqued steel moans are given just as much footing as vocal eruptions & volcanic percussions upon the 66-foot-tall sculpture sides. No electricity. No effects. Just the quickening of sweat, absorption of metallic shock, and shedding of blood in a thrilling attempt to locate one of the deepest ancestral rites — discovery though smashing shit up. sundrips - through obversion - digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
i've been to canada many times. hell, half of my family still lives up there and i can tell you one thing it isn't: tropical. sorry brothers & sisters in the great white north, that's just not how it flies. well, sundrips would beg to differ it seems. this montreal-based duo craft hypnotic song structures that will heat you up even during the depths of those canadian winters.
armed mainly with a synthesizer and guitar, sundrips are doing a fine job of carving out their own space amongst the cosmos. "through obversion" is filled with four concise rainbow shots toward oblivion. accented with droning vocals and various tape loops, these songs are like statues to the sun gods. dreamlike arpeggios and heavily-delayed guitar notes wind together tightening around your skull. in the end you're floating somewhere outside the clouds, sucking down as much of the pure, prismatic air as you can. edition of 75, pro-dubbed.

nathan mclaughlin - echolocation #2- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
alright friends, this one goes deep. REAL deep. nathan mclaughlin (half of the excellent loud & sad, who you will hear more about later this year) offers up the second volume of his "echolocation" trilogy (vol. 3 coming on gift tapes this fall while vol. 1 remains up-in-the-air) and we are all the better for it. deftly composed electronics bind together effortlessly with ghost drones of the highest order. this is music that is simultaneously beautiful and disjointed. mclaughlin is an expert at knowing the perfect placement for each movement and each fluid note.
"echolocation" is split into six separate pieces, but they all form together to form a much greater whole. this isn't a single continous composition, but the pieces fit together expertly. fuzzy tones generator from decaying radio waves and field recordings sit alongside delicate drones without interfering with each other. at times i'm reminded of some eloy's "shanti" record or dick raajimakers longer tape pieces, but "echolocation" is something that is wholly mclaughlin's own. exquisite.edition of 75, pro-dubbed.

but as i've come to expect, headboggle shows up for a live rendition next making me jones heavy to see this spectacle in person. minimalist electronic sculptures battle it out with the crowd's voices, the latter adding an unexpected bonus to the proceedings. it's some haunted spliff. headboggle never sounds like anything but headboggle and ends up stuck in your skull for days on end. you just have to keep going back to it, trying to figure out what the hell happened while you were out. edition of 75, pro-dubbed.

afterlife - bodies in motion- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
if this is what the afterlife is like maybe i should start believing in that shit. but really the duo of ryan mcgill (cliffsides) and franklin teagle (meditations) stretches their wings and fly even further on their latest declaration finding the visceral symmetry in subtle shifts and simple composition. dual synthscapes that line the sky with their warm, glowing major chord changes and galactic leads. its music that is easy to grasp on the surface, but deeper listening reveals something even more magical.
of course, on the flip they go straight-up mid-80s sci-fi with abandon. this is not fucking kitsch, it's fucking awesome. minimal beats provide the backbone for rising-and-falling notes and pitchbends. it's exactly what i think of when i heard the phrase "bodies in motion." everything devolves in the end, becoming a spastic mass of elegiac tones that get buried underneath washes of square waves and noise. sort of a poetic end if you ask me. edition of 80, pro-dubbed.

dense reduction - fictive agriculture- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
travis bird and evan lindorff-ellery caught my attention straight away on their first trio of releases on the label they run together, notice recordings. "fictive agriculture" finds them spewing new organic sonar trails through hazy concrete forests. this is music that requires repeated listens to fully digest all the layers. things start off minimal and almost-melodic before bursting into a blown-out, churning mess. things go back & forth, covered in tape hiss and full of tonal warmth. it's like unsuspectingly tuning into lost radio transmissions from the past half-century, sending out maydays from a distant planet.
the flipside opens things up a bit with some harmonic sand castles from the start. eventually the tide rolls in and smashes the whole thing into bits, but the cleansing is all well and good because bleak, dissonant electronic triumph emerges from the ashes. it coalesces into a feedback labyrinth, unsafe for those with delicate ears. edition of 75, pro-dubbed.

acoustic drones flicker like organic spires in the distance. the group's combined voices singing through heavy rays like sirens beckoning you home. the build-up is incredible. minimal, nearly-tribal drums push the movement to another level entirely as it enters into its cathartic, critical mass before breaking down and decaying back into the earth. left behind are the strums of guitars and industrial, percussive blasts that couldn't be contained in the fallout. edition of 80.

this white leopards tape has been a long-time coming but will prove worth the wait in the end. win chavez exists on his own plane out in the city of angels, a wizard with analog prowess. on this tape chavez blurs the line between composition and improvisation, never allowing the listener to be sure where this music is coming from but always sure of its ability to lodge itself deep inside his or her psyche.
this isn't just your standard-fair schulze/schnitzler worship session. chavez ignites his own scree, spewing out concise synthetic concoctions that skirt the line between the darkness & light. sinewaves flow underneath, creating smooth rivers to build oscillating sawtooth masses on. hints of bliss shine through and warped voices try to speak-out from the lurch as the whole thing becomes a spectral, whirring idol. edition of 75.

michael james tapscott "sunny california OST- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
if i could only be serenaded by one person for the rest of my days, i'd choose michael tapscott in a heartbeat. the odawas vocalist's talent is something to die for. that voice... cannot be beat. but what tapscott brings on his debut solo release under his own name is far more than just that voice. this is the soundtrack to theshort film of the same name by neil blakemore and follows in the ocean-drift steps of the last odawas record, "the blue depths." melodic synthesizer passages float lightly on simple, seductive drum machine beats and acoustic guitar lines. erratic, almost-harsh electronica even makes an appearance as tapscott uses all his tricks to crystalize the theme of the film. every turn finds a new path, all of which lead back to the central precipice.
"sunny california" is a place rife with beauty and sadness and as tapscott as our guide, we're bound to find something to treasure. edition of 100.

knit prism/w.a. munson - split - digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
this split from knit prism and black eagle child-spinoff w.a munson finds its solace in the greath white north. ontario's knit prism aka michael pouw has been churning out gem after gem lately and this split follows-up on his gift tape quite nicely. hazy drones bleed into glassine accompaniment, shards falling like hypnotic crystal rain. pouw cuts and pastes like a master, fusing together something ancestral with an aim to the future. his piece is equal parts old, dusty relic and computer-age synth dream. pouw's a master craftsman and knit prism is just getting started.
munson returns from hiatus and eschews the momentum of black eagle child to dive straight back into the deep end of the pool. somebody asked me if he's using a heavily-effected guitar or a synth and i honestly have no idea and could really care less. munson is playing for keeps. over the first half, munson is searching. underneath hiss and fuzz, time-worn melodies play-out even if they're completely unsure of the destination. but midway is his come-to-jesus moment. the fog and haze clear and we're left with a beautiful, modern hymnal. tones and melodies that remind me of boards of canada suck you in without fail. equal parts earnest and heartbroken, its a place i could stay for a good, long while. edition of 75.

ricardo donoso - deterrence- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
i think ricardo donoso has to be one of boston's best-kept secrets. when he's not performing as 1/2 of perispirit (recent tape on hospital) or in the avant black metal outfit, ehnare, he runs his semate productions label. in other words, donoso is busy and responsible for a lot of excellent things. his solo work is no exception.
on "deterrence," donoso finds his peak. generated with guitar, analog synth, piano, tapes & contact mics, this is an album of layers. each repeat listen finds new elements and new sounds floating deep in the mix. donoso's interest in game theory and behavioral psychology are the theme to which the music wraps itself around. by the time the final pieace, "mutually assured destruction," reaches its inevitable climax, the listener is left to pick up the pieces. in these slow-decaying sounds are the roots of introspection. listen closely and make your own choices. edition of 80.

red electric rainbow - harmonic sail- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
chicago in august is going the place you're going to want to be. well, at least during the weekend of the 22nd as the neon marshmallow festival takes over the city. one of the co-organizers of said fest is daniel smith AKA red electric rainbow. after a slew of under-the-radar-but-totally-great releases on his own neon blossom label, smith brings his haunted paradise down I-55 and into the digitalis realm.
"harmonic sail" won't fail to brighten spirits and enchant. endless, reverb-soaked keyboards runs fly up & down the scales, sounding like the opening to the gates of heaven. smith adds some mid-range crunch, like he wants to break into some kind of garage-inspired solo but can't quite get off the ground. it blends together in perfect harmony. the tape closes out with the short and sweet "ocean mist," the pefect polyphonic bring down after the title track's (both parts) glorious ride. edition of 75

mass ornament - fyxe- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
it's been a while, but it's finally time for the latest feather in eden hemming's cap to be plucked. "fyxe" follows-up 2008's "bewilderness" on her own teosinte label. but forget what you know because this is the next level and where it goes from here, i can only guess.
"fyxe" is heavy. it's deep. from the opening, bass-heavy electronics and wordless vocal loops of "polygon angel" you know you're in for a treat. the rise of altar eagle has led to more vocal-heavy compositions in hemming's solo wares, but for my money that's no bad thing. discordant, almost-lost guitar structures provide the bass for more soaring. there's a harsher side, too, with found objects fed through a continous circuit of reverbs and delays to create aural moonscapes devoid of tonality. metallic drones pierce the dust while she suffers through, dropping vocals from a perch above. at any minute everything could fall apart. it's a beautiful thing. edition of 75.

secret colors - dreamersss- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
the first time i heard matt lawson's (aka secret colors) "infinite wandering" tape, i was hooked. this is my summer soundtrack and should also be yours. blissed-out keys and time-warped, sun-soaked guitars greet you at the gates and trail you throughout your journey through "dreamersss." rising melodies blanket your ears in a delicate crystalline haze, pouring fluorescent pink rain down your throat and in your eyes. what a fucking world.
minimal beats take you straight to the beach under overcast skies. synths blurt out the punchline and glockenspiel serenades bring it all back home. there's something increasingly reflective and nostalgic about lawson's approach. he records on a warm sonic landscape that adds depth and even a bit of gnarl to his deceptively catchy songs. in all, secret colors never disappoints and keeps your head bobbing under the sun. edition of 80, pro-dubbed & imprinted

chubby wolf - ornitheology- digitalis recordings - cass - 7$
chubby wolf is the nom de plume of celer's dani long and though she tragically left us last year, her stunning music lives on to keep her voice growing. "ornitheology" has been in the vaults for sometime but the time finally felt right to let this sprawling mass of phosphorescent beauty spread its delicate wings.
listening to long's solo works it becomes obvious how potent her contributions to celer really were. this is subtle, devastating music. crisp drones that flourish like moonflowers at midnight, sending off sensous queues to your synapses and taking you places far into the sky. we are all lucky that there is still an exquisite mountain of chubby wolf offerings waiting for their day in the sun. "ornitheology" is only the beginning. edition of 125, pro-dubbed & imprinted.
