  • holovr – hollow earth – opal tapes

    $23.00 Add to cart

Jimmy Billingham returns to Opal Tapes with Holo Earth, the first HOLOVR 12″. The two sides are comprised of blended suites covering Billingham’s past working with tapes and hardware into a future of more complex composition and convolving sample work. At times the record is sweet, drums bounce and bip with filigrees of synth whirling through like wind in a bottle. At other points the record empties and the lonely pulse of Venn Rain (Jimmy’s earlier project) is felt most strongly. Estranged and blue-lipped, the field recordings of alien environments litter the blur emerging. A haunting listen.

    wikipedia, „2011 england riots“
jimmy billingham’s last release under his „venn rain“ moniker adds a cultural nuance to this ongoing debate. have the suspicion that he felt like being in the eye of the storm recording his „crepuscular raze“. his trademark foggy drones with guitar feedback and fx and stuff makes you feel like lost in a capsule staggering into the outer realms of your inner space. very far out but hey, it feels so good! and keep in mind, the „real“ world around you is and will always be just plain crazy.

  • venn rain – place in world – tranquility tapes

    out of stock

Though it doesn’t stray too far from the blissful sonic territory mined by his primary guise, Tidal, loops are the chief focus of Jimmy Billingham’s latest project, Venn Rain. Billingham takes the listener for a whirling ride as he presents each loop and affects it gradually, adding new loops into the mix with careful precision and ultimately building each track to a billowing climax. A wide variety of moods and sounds are explored throughout Place in World, from jangly guitars, to lush Cocteau worship, to infectious synth pop grooves. With only short bites of sound and a relatively simple premise, Billingham crafts four sprawling works that manage to engross and even surprise throughout their duration. Pro-dubbed and imprinted chrome cassettes, featuring designs by Caroline Teagle.
