    out of stock

first ever vinyl edition of this album, originally released in NZ as a tiny cdr edition on ALASTAIR GALBRAITH’s ‘next best way’ label in 2008, four years before the release of FELT. overall a more polarized and pleasantly tumultuous listen compared with the starkly beautiful FELT, but revealing just as much subtle grace. playing out as though occasionally whipped by a salty wind, with gusts of psychedelic noise rising here & there to engulf these fragile poetic songs, sending them infinitely outward. a more externalized & expansive listening experience then the inward stillness of FELT, and a perfect mirrored pair to the later. these songs will beam deep into your unconscious before you’ve even realized you remembered them. the sound here is decidedly 4-track home-fi, with a gauzy analog mist ever present & the sounds of the environment gently creeping in. a largely solo affair, but with considerable & highly distinctive contributions from ALASTAIR GALBRAITH, adding an electrified & disorienting edge. truly wonderful stuff here, with plenty of that unique new zealand magic. raw, pure, and completely unforgettable… packaged in a totally hand assembled fold-out art paper cover with screen printed text & pasted artwork, nicely matching the FELT covers. edition of 300 copies.

new vinyl edition of this amazing & instantly out of print album, originally released in NZ as a tiny 100 copy edition in 2012. while maxine’s earlier LACE album unfolds as a more externalized & psychedelic experience, here everything focuses inwards with an utterly beautiful, lulling, tidal tranquility. overflowing with warmth & humble magic, like watching dust dance in a beam of sunlight through an open window. a kind of intimate microcosmic observation of the everyday, stretching the tiniest joys & subtlest quirks of life into something truly poetic and timeless. the songwriting is deep & revelatory, yet totally raw & unforced. fully in the “now” but also completely part of the infinite, like it’s been pulled directly from the vague spaces between time & place themselves… stillness in motion… a sparse 4-track home-fi recording, with a gauzy analog mist ever present & the sounds of the environment gently creeping in. sublimely wonderful stuff here, with plenty of that unique new zealand magic. direct, pure & unforgettable, in the most lovely way… packaged in a totally hand assembled fold-out art paper cover with screen printed text & pasted artwork, nicely matching the LACE covers. edition of 300 copies.

  • ellie daniels – both sides of the coin – time lag records

deluxe reissue of this totally unknown new england teenage folk private press from 1971. originally released by the artist herself as a demo only blank cover edition of 100 copies. just out of high school and hoping somebody might pay attention, the lp slipped though the cracks, the chapter closed, and life moved forward on a different coarse… but the album left behind stands as a true female loner folk gem, of which there aren’t many at all… just ellie’s humbly intimate vocals & her harp-like self taught finger-picked guitar playing, plus some lovely pastoral flute by a friend on a handful of tracks. the sounds are straight from the tuned-in melancholy teenage mind, reeling from the mind expansion of the 60s, but also the excesses. deeply reflective, poetic & searching lyrics of love / nature / peace playing out in real time against stark reality / longing / loss, and balanced at the very edge of the void. the aching innocence of youth tempered by a biting contempt for all things false… in the liner notes ellie mentions only practicing under a blanket, and there’s a up-close, lo-fi, almost voyeuristic realism / fragility here that’s quite special. a complex & personal trip that takes some time & attention to fully unfold. once it does, it will be no surprise that ellie went on to build geodesic domes & become a professional midwife, as that same unique spirit is already deeply embedded here… a really wonderful album we’re happy to help finally reach some receptive ears… the original had no cover art, so we’ve kept the packaging suitably stark & mysterious, yet quite exquisite : each heavyweight vintage style cover is individually hand-bound in leather textured art paper, with the only graphics being a mounted 5×7 inch black & white photo print portrait of ellie from 1970. pressed on 180gm virgin vinyl, with exact reproduction labels & a thick insert with new liner notes by ellie, plus more vintage photos. edition of 300 copies, in two cover color / texture variations.

first ever reissue of this rare & obscure french private press lp from 1976. more of a one-off happening then an actual band, the album resulted from the one & only meeting of the group for a single overnight champagne-fueled session. as unlikely as it seems, somebody thought to roll some tape, and a very special evening was captured & pressed to vinyl… opening with a gorgeous drifting instrumental, and centered around three long jaw-dropping acidfolk originals, the album is filled out by wild romps though traditional folk songs. all english lyrics, female backing vocal, two acoustic guitars, dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, and some especially beautiful snaky flute work. the original compositions are truly magical : gently flowing and beautifully pastoral, but with an eerie, druggy, edginess. think ‘book of am’ minus the sunshine & electricity and you’ll be in the right zone… the trad folk cuts on the other hand are nearly as cool : joyous, dirty, and totally ragged music by & for the people. no ‘folk boom’ pretense on display, just ageless tunes, fast pickin’ and wild drunken wooziness, like some sort of reckless gypsy hoe-down… everything here is totally steeped in a damp, pagan / mystical basement atmosphere, that combined with the raw direct-to-tape, no overdubs / mixing execution & perfectly crude, haunting cover art make for a very distinct whole… originally only a few hundred copies of the lp were pressed up, and as there was no actual band to promote, those gradually slipped away into total obscurity. front covers were crudely screenprinted in green & black, and various back cover concepts were attempted & scrapped : a screenprinted variation had the incorrect track list and was all but totally illegible, some hand typed stickers were randomly done up, some had an inserted or pasted mimeograph copy with notes / credits, and many were simply left blank… presented here our version is hand screenprinted just like the original, with a paste-on back cover reproduction of the original mimeograph, all on a heavy weight vintage style cover. pressed on 180gm virgin vinyl, with exact reproduction labels. edition of 350 copies.

  • joshua burkett – xavier’s birds – time lag records (7″ & art book)

    out of stock

really wonderful release here… full sensory stimulation from one of the our fave & most under-documented contemporary players, artists, and general hushed enthusiasts of the unusual (mental, visual, musical, etc.)… more then a few folks in the know list ‘gold cosmos’ and ‘where’s my hat?’ as all time classics, so no doubt these new tracks are bound to please. a bit different from past releases, each of the three tracks here is a collaboration with a different long time friend and musical compatriot, building off josh’s unmistakable home-fi acoustic foundation : LAU NAU adds her stunningly haunted vocal textures, WILLIE LANE strangles electrified strings like only he can, and THURSTON MOORE subtly corrodes with a haze of damaged frequencies & vibrating plucks… three totally separate vibes unfold as diverse golden facets of a whole… as few and far between as proper burkett releases have been over the years, even less exposed has been his amazing & unique artwork. while just about anybody with a eye turned towards new england underground album cover art, show posters, mail art, etc. will surely have had a glimpse of josh’s instantly recognizable visual universe, the quantity, scope, and focus of his paintings, drawing, sculptures (and words!) presented here is truly visionary. josh’s hand picked selection of pieces for the book span from all the way back to his very earliest paintings, up to some of his most recent… the book itself is 52 full color, pro-printed pages of artwork, each piece accompanied by josh’s equally interesting stream of consciousness writing about the work, which is both enlightening, highly amusing, and often pretty hysterical. get comfy, get lifted, and settle in for a multi-sensory trip… 7inch is a large hole 45rpm disc with hand stamped labels. book has a double-sided offset printed neon green cover, with a hand painted & metallic gold screen printed wrap-around title strip. numbered edition of 222 copies.
