  • garde forestier – – field hymns

    $6.00 Add to cart

Garde Forestier is vaguely sinister 80’s hold music a lunatic French guru turned into mediation loops. Or perhaps it’s a Casio workstation gone on the fritz but becoming sentient, all whilst dealing with the breakdown of its physical body and the unfairness of bothering with such a burden at such a momentous time. Maybe Garde Forestier really is a front for a Danish trio of nuns who built up these tracks in the brief moments free from the rigors of monastic life. Perhaps we are witnessing the first stirring of a post-vaporwave work unbound and unmoored from its stable of lockstep clone acolytes. Perhaps.

Garde Forestier is from Tours, FR

very first intention was to come up with the tape release consisting of tracks made by using solely guitar resonances. so few tracks are based, almost purely, on the sound fragments which were recorded in a way that i started to record couple of seconds, even minutes, after the last tone was played. on the other hand, there are “more regular” tracks which are based on a simple melody, repeated during the entire track. i have always had some kind of fondness for such tracks, there is some kind of thrill which puts listener into an expectation of the change which, at the end, does not come. finally i’ve recorded tracks that represent some kind of conjunction of what one can hear on the album, abstract fragments as well as melodic parts. as the result, the white colour of the clouds represents probably the most conceptualized release I have ever made.
masterfully crafted reverberating guitar drones that keeps no soul untouched. everybody needs some drone pillow from time to time, don’t you?

  • grapefruit – knights temple – mjmj records

    $7.00 Add to cart

The third and final release in our spring series comes in the form of a grooved out exploration of stoned psychedelia, courtesy of Portland’s Grapefruit. Over the years Charles Salas Humara has been releasing cassettes of various psychedelic flavors under his Grapefruit moniker. Some more synth based, some heavy on the guitar, others (like his recent Squiggle Dot release), are more lighthearted. Knights Temple finds him channeling the burnt up, fuzzy, down tempo guitar and organ groovers of 70’s psych. The whole album conjures the feeling of a dark smoky room in some far out locale, sensations slowing to a crawl in a drug induced haze. At times sinister and twisted, others sensual and raw, this is a tape you’ll be reaching for when the lights are low and heads are fuzzy. In celebration of the beginning of summer, MJ MJ is proud to bring you the soundtrack to your next LSD comedown.

All sounds created by Charles B. Salas Humara in Portland, OR.
Mastered by Andrew Todryk in Minneapolis, MN.
Packaging designed by Nico Stephou in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Released by MJ MJ Records in Minneapolis, MN June 2016

  • bary center – no stars – mjmj records

    $7.00 Add to cart

The second installment in our spring series is a fantastic, and slightly out of character, Bary Center album. Under the moniker Bary Center, Mark Williams has been releasing burnt up, knockout techno at a furious pace on a number of fine labels (Crash Symbols, Skrot Up, MJ MJ, Speaker Footage, Gnar Tapes, Headway). Even with such an impressive discography we can honestly say this is probably our favorite album that he’s put out yet (and he’d agree). No Stars finds Bary exploring the deepest depths of dub, psych, techno, ambient and noise, while still somehow maintaining an effortless flow throughout it’s nearly hour long play time. Bary has a knack for drawing out a groove or texture to its fullest fruition, rewarding an attentive and thorough listen, but at the same time creating a sonic environment where you can just let it ride and zone out.

In M. Williams’ words – “I wanted this album to feel like just one day, so I tried to build a snapshot of all the feelings and scenarios that a person goes through in a single day – the relaxing parts, the intense parts, the hype parts, the dark parts, the lighthearted parts. I wanted people to press play and by the end of the album be able to connect each track to a part of their day. We get so crazy focused on tomorrow and the big picture that we often forget that just making it through the gauntlet of shit life throws at us in a 24 hour period is quite an accomplishment in itself.”

All sounds created by Bary Center / Mark Williams in Huntington, WV.
Guitar on tracks one, two and three performed by Michael Berry.
    Mastered by Cyrus Shamir.
Packaging designed by Nico Stephou in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Released by MJ MJ Records in Minneapolis, MN in May 2016.

  • million brazilians – slip enchantment – psychic sounds

    $5.00 Add to cart

The new work, captured in the Northwest at Olympia’s famed Dub Narcotic studio and the band’s own Hive Studio, maintains the hypnotic entanglements of their previous work while adding in some welcome intrusions of noise and some horror movie soundtrack atmospherics. Just listen to how “A Coin Set Upon Crossed Roads” creaks to life like a Golem finding its balance before slowly breaking into an elegant ndlamu, urged on by Suzanne Stone’s wild vocals, the drums of James Shaver, and the unholy scrape of guest player Idaho Joe Windslow’s gongtar.

The flipside – the three movement “Triple Torch” – takes the opposite tack, bouncing into the world with a dangerously charming grin and the jangle of metal on metal before the second section wheezes into view through the skein of hair-raising reed work via Corum and friend of the Brazilians Arrington de Dionyso on contrabass clarinet. It’s not necessarily relaxing or calming. It’s more like setting a steady buzz into your medulla oblongata to facilitate the flow of blood to your extremities. You’ll feel alive and tingling and fully aware. Get a cassette deck that will play both sides in a loop to better facilitate the immersive experience of Slip Enchantments. Your mind and body will thank you for it.” – Robert Hamm, Experimental Portland

-Professionally dubbed onto chrome tape with optional Dolby B
    -Color art & insert
    -Running time: 34 minutes

  • kambang adzan ‎– floating call to prayer – eiderdown records

    $7.00 Add to cart

“This recording was made while living in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, around 1997 or 1998. Using a Sony DAT recorder and stereo microphone I had sought out the highest place where I lived to record one of the many thunderstorms that happen during monsoon season. I ended up recording on a rooftop where there were several caged and unhappy house-cats pleading with me (they can be heard on the recording) to let them out.
I hit record and a few hours later, returned to collect my equipment. By happy coincidence I had also recorded the many Adzans, or call to prayers, from the nearby mosques. I hope you enjoy this aural slice of life from another time. “
